PARTY IDEAS: MODERN SPORTS TEAM PARTY
At some point in time, you will have to host a sports themed party. If you are a football family, maybe more than once. This year it is my second go at a sports team party. My first was a few years back with a Seahawks birthday party. This year we have a Clemson themed party. If you have read this blog even once, you know I always have to do a little better than buying all the novelty plates and cups and call it a party. I want my parties to feel more homemade and well planned even if I just ordered this all on Amazon. So I thought I would write a post to let you know how you can take a ho-hum football party and make it a little more fun.
One of the coolest things I have learned since moving to Charleston is the southern way of celebrating. Out with the cheesy t-shirts with the team logo on them for ladies, and in with team colors in a chic outfit that you would actually wear if it wasn’t game day. It’s so much more chic and really lets you express yourself rather than doing what everyone else is doing. This style can be applied to a party, too!
First, take the team colors and run with them, but not ALL of them. This seems super simple, but it is really the most important. You need to really pick one color to be the main color, in my case orange, and then choose a secondary color, white. Then, leave the least awesome color, purple, as an accent, so you just see a little sprinkle of it around the party. Simplifying the color palette to one main color, brings cohesiveness to the party and makes it pop.
Second, modernize and simplify the logo or main graphic. A Clemson claw print is already pretty simple, so I can work with that. I will have it on the cake and on the cookies. For sanity sake, I am making a round birthday cake and cookies and then decorating the paw print on top of it in orange. For the Seahawks, you could do the Seahawk logo or the “12” for the twelfth man. Every team has it’s thing, so try to make it easy, but also recognizable. Simple is always better.
Third, make a matching banner. I did a quick internet search to find approved fonts for Clemson (which is here btw) and then I made a birthday banner using Illustrator, you could use Word too. All it took was finding the font online and loading them on my computer. Then I centered single letters on top of this quick template I made for you guys. Print out “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” or “GO TEAM” or what ever you like. Then cut out on the lines and hang.

It doesn’t take much to feel like a themed birthday, but I’m going to offer you one more piece of advice for the best decorated birthday: don’t just do one or two of anything, do at least half a dozen. This can be garland, balloons honeycomb balls, tissue festooning. GO big or go home. You get the most bang for your buck and it really doesn’t cost that much to go over the top with the solid color items. Then, even if you do have Clemson plates and cups, it will look like the decorations are an accent to the best Clemson party ever, and not an after thought.
